Fundraiser set for orphanage, seminarians

November 10, 2010

A local church will raise funds this weekend to make an impact domestically and on another continent.
Aldersgate United Methodist Church will host a free soup and chili lunch coupled with a bake sale Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The bake sale will feature homemade pies, cookies, banana nut bread, a Swedish tea ring breakfast pastry and an assortment of cakes, including coconut, chocolate, hummingbird and Italian cream, said the Rev. George Buell, the church’s pastor.
The fundraising effort’s beneficiaries will include the Rafiki Orphanage in Winneba, Ghana and three seminarians with Starkville ties, Buell said.
Ghana is located on the southern edge of the western tip of Africa and Winneba is on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. The orphanage is a residential care facility with a school currently housing 18 children.
Money raised will go to support the orphanage, Buell said, adding one of the reasons for the orphanage’s existence is save its occupants from child labor. Ten Mississippi State University Wesley Foundation students will go to the orphanage to work in December, he said.
Also, the effort on Saturday is designed to help Jonathan and Laura Stokes, Nathan and Caroline Phillips and Chandler and Chelsea Ragland. The first two are in seminary at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. and the remaining one is in Duke Divinity School in Durham, N.C.
