Aldermen to discuss carts for garbage collection

In effort to cut costs and clean up neighborhoods, Starkville city officials could approve a new container system for garbage.
By switching from garbage bags to 96-gallon carts, the City of Starkville’s Sanitation Dervices could save about $600,000 over a decade, Ward 3 Alderman Eric Parker said.
“I was very conservative on those numbers,” explained Parker, who excluded additional cost savings on workman’s compensation. “I feel like we could save a minimum of what I presented.”
Parker, sanitation and recycling chair, presented a rough comparison of pros and cons to the switch during last Tuesday’s meeting of the Board of Aldermen.
“I haven’t heard a whole lot from the people of Ward 3 since then,” he said. “I would appreciate any feedback before we take this up for consideration.”
Parker received strong support from Ward 5 Alderman Jeremiah Dumas and Vice Mayor Sandra Sistrunk, who will not be able to make tonight’s meeting.”
Ward 6 Alderman Roy Á. Perkins opposed the idea, however, taking the approach of “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” two weeks ago.
The board take the issue up for consideration during a meeting today at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall courtroom on Lampkin Street.
