Church gears up for Thanksgiving meal

A local church is gearing up to feed several hundred people Thanksgiving Day for the 11th year.
On average, Peter’s Rock Temple Church of God in Christ serves 500 meals at Thanksgiving, though it has been as high as 700, said Michael Jones, the church’s administrator.
The vision for the event first started with Supt. Joseph Hawkins, the church’s pastor, Jones said, and this was to” serve the community and provide meals for the less-fortunate,” including those in nursing homes and jail.
Organizers gather volunteers to serve, cook and drive, as as well as to prepare the carry-outs.
Another volunteer base is for order-takers — people who answer the phone.
The meals are pretty much donated through the Peter’s Rock congregation and the church itself, Jones said.
The meal typically consists of turkey or ham, dressing, two sides and a roll. The dinner – which will served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday – is free and open to the public.
Dine-in is available, as is carry out for senior citizens and those sick and shut-in. Delivery is also available.
