Starkville Academy girls hand JA first loss

MADISON – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers handed Jackson Academy its first loss of the season, a 37-22 decision, during the Madison-Ridgeland Academy Tournament Wednesday.
The Lady Vols (6-5) only allowed Jackson Academy to score one field goal in the second half as the hosts were only 1 of 18 from the field during that time.
"They really did a good job of executing the game plan," Starkville Academy coach Glenn Schmidt said. "JA hit us with a lot of pressure and we knew they would, but we did a great job of executing."
Nora Kathryn Carroll led the Lady Vols with 14 points, while Anna Prestridge was able to contribute nine points, all in the second half.
"She had to handle the ball the whole time against their defense and she fought through it," Schmidt said. "To be able to score all of her points in the second half, all of points were big."
Anna Lea Little had five points, six rebounds and two assists for SA and Julianne Jackson added five points and five rebounds.
With the victory, the Lady Volunteers meet Pillow Academy at the MRA Tournament today. The tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.

MADISON – The Starkville Academy Volunteers fell behind 33-23 at halftime and went on to drop a decision to Jackson Academy.
J.R. Gerhart was the leading scorer for the Vols with seven points, while Jon Michael Robinson, Kyle Lomen and Hunter Bolin all chipped iin six points each.
Starkville Academy (4-4) doesn't play again at the MRA Tournament until Saturday at 2:15 p.m. against Heritage.
