December 5, 2010

From Staff Reports

MADISON – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers rebounded from a tough loss to Pillow Academy on Thursday to defeat East Rankin Academy 68-42 in the consolation game of the Madison-Ridgeland Academy Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Vols exploded out to a 25-11 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 37-19 by halftime.
"It was a huge comeback after a discouraging loss to Pillow," SA girls coach Glenn Schmidt said. "I thought we responded really well and were ready to play again. This was a great win for us."
Schmidt was pleased with the entire effort of the team, but particularly noted the performance of her post players Sallie Kate Richardson and Anna Leigh Little, who each had a double-double. Richardson had 20 points, 12 rebounds and added three blocked shots, while Little scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Nora Kathryn Carroll contributed nine points, three rebounds and two blocked shots for the Lady Vols, Julianne Jackson chipped in seven points and four rebounds, Anna Prestridge had six points, five assists and two rebounds.
Starkville Academy shot 64 percent from the field, 60 percent from three-point range and 62 percent from the free-throw line.

The Vols could only generate 15 first-quarter points to fall into a hole and couldn't quite climb out in the consolation round of the MRA Tournament.
Austin Kinard scored 16 points, but was the only SA player in double figures. J.R. Gerhart had nine points.
The Vols (4-5) don't have to wait long to get another shot against Heritage as they meet in Starkville on Tuesday to open North Class AAA conference play.
