Long-time Sturgis resident J.D. McDonald was named the grand marshal for the 2010 Christmas Parade, held Saturday in downtown Sturgis.
Sturgis Mayor Walter Turner said McDonald did a great job as grand marshal and well-deserved the honor.
âHe is a high-quality individual and very deserving of this recognition for his contribution to the community,â Turner said.
The announcement of the grand marshal is always a surprise for the community and this year was no exception. The parade committee was excited to honor McDonald for his service to Sturgis.
Turner said the parade was a great success with lots of community participation.
For the âSharing a Small Town Christmasâ parade, committee members waived the float entry fee and asked those participating in the parade and members of the community to âshare the Christmas spiritâ by bringing a canned food donation for the Palmer Home for Children.
Turner said he was not certain of the exact number of cans collected at Saturdayâs event, but he reported parade entries bringing sacks of canned food, not just one or two cans.
Best float winners were not available at press time.
