SDN Staff Reports

A Mississippi State University student who suffered a major head injury after falling down a flight of stairs at a party late last week died late Monday night at a Tupelo hospital.
Taylor Lyons, 22, of Ocean Springs was attending a party at an apartment on Planter’s Row when he fell 6 feet down a flight of stairs just before 3 a.m. this past Friday.
Lyons was initially transported to OCH Regional Medical Center, but was soon transferred by helicopter to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, where he underwent surgery for his injury Friday afternoon.
Lyons died about 9:30 p.m. Monday of closed head trauma, said Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt, to whom the case was referred by Lee County officials.
Whether alcohol played a role in Lyons’ fall will be confirmed by toxicology reports, Hunt said.
On Friday, after Lyons’ fall, OCH paramedics were called to the apartment, and Starkville firefighters quickly responded to assist them in stabilizing Lyons for transport by ambulance to the hospital.
Police Department detectives were also called to the apartment on Friday, but quickly ruled the fall as accidental and said later Friday that no foul play was involved.
Lyons was a President’s Scholar in the MSU College of Arts and Sciences. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Numerous tributes from friends and acquaintances had been posted on Lyons’ profile on the Facebook social networking website by late Tuesday afternoon.
Many of the Facebook posts — most by fellow MSU students — expressed disbelief over Lyons’ death.
