Junior Jackets get championship at West Lauderdale

December 21, 2010

From Staff Reports

COLLINSVILLE – Apparently, the upcoming holiday isn't a distraction for the Armstrong Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team.
Last Saturday, the Junior Jackets traveled to Collinsville and won a pair of games at the West Lauderdale Christmas Tournament to capture the event's championship.
"We received good play from our guards, our big guys and our bench players," said Armstrong head coach Tony Minor.
In Saturday's first game, Jay Clay paced the Junior Jackets with a team-high 12 points and Tyler Rogers added eight as Armstrong downed Northeast Lauderdale 26-21.
To capture the tourney crown, the Junior Jackets defeated host West Lauderdale 37-25 later in the day.
In that game, Jared Williams led Armstrong in scoring with a 12-point performance.
Clay and Rogers each added six points apiece.
Minor was proud of his team's play against a pair of unfamiliar opponents.
"It's always good to play somebody different with other styles and strengths than what we see in the Golden Triangle area," said Minor. "We adapted well after taking nine weeks tests and were just excited about playing again."
The Junior Jackets return to action on Monday, Jan. 3, with home contests against Louisville.
The eighth grade girls will begin the night's action with a 4:30 p.m. contest to be immediately followed by the ninth grade girls, the eighth grade boys and the ninth grade boys games.
