Maben Christmas lighting contest winners named

December 24, 2010

For the Daily News

The night was really cold and windy as the out-of-town judges and the MHGC representatives, Dottie Dewberry and Marie Pinnix, cruised the city streets perusing the Maben Christmas tree lights, looking for winners in the best overall, best door, and best business in town on December 14, 2010.
This is the 48th annual judging of lights, which is sponsored by the Maben Home and Garden Club each year.
The three judges, who were from Eupora and Mathiston, used score sheets provided by the club to determine the winners.
Using a scale of one to ten in overall aesthetics, color harmony, mechanics, and lights, the ladies worked for several hours trying to make the best choices.
This year the MHGC Christmas Lighting Committee created a new category by dividing the houses into two sizes: large and standard, which gave the standard houses an opportunity to win.
Certificates, ribbons, and a small monetary remuneration will be given to first place winners. All others will receive certificates and ribbons. First place winners will be pictured in the local papers.
The best business winners are as follows:
• Maben Public Library, first place.
• Waddell Insurance, second place.
• Cadence Banking, third place.
• Town of Maben City Hall, honorable mention.
The Best Overall Standard House winners are as follows:
• Mitchell Halford, first place.
• Booter Fulgham, second place.
• Richard Walters, third place.
• Claude Brown, honorable mention.
The winners in Best Overall Large House are as follows:
• Ann Walls, first place.
• Tony Miles, second place.
• Margaret Shuffield, third place.
• Gladys Hendrix, honorable mention.
The Best Door winners are as follows:
• Mildred Thomas, first place.
• Robbie Gordon, second place.
• Betty Peck, third place.
• June Turner, honorable mention.
After servings of desserts and drinks at Larry C’s, the judges and MHGC people traveled home after a good night’s work of judging the lights of Maben.
