The funeral for Mary Ellen Oswalt Green will be today at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Starkville with burial in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery. The Revs. Danny Roland and Prentiss Gordon Sr. will officiate.
Mrs. Green, 79, passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the OCH Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mary Green was born February 4, 1931, in Choctaw County and grew up in Ackerman. Later she moved to Starkville where she met and married Henry Green. She retired from Mississippi State University after over 30 years of service as a secretary in the Department of Entomology and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, where she was active in Sunday school and the United Methodist Women’s organization. Through the years she was active in various groups including Oktibbeha County Historical and Genealogical Society, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Green Thumb Garden Club. She also devoted many hours of volunteer service to Meals on Wheels.
Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her parents, William S. and May Austin Oswalt; her husband, Dr. Henry Burwell Green and granddaughter, Alexa Burwell McGrath.
She is survived by sons, William Green of Starkville, and Austin Green of Damon, Texas; daughters, Katherine Green of Madison, and Dr. Ellen G. McGrath and husband Charles McGrath of Cherry Hills Village, Colo. and one grandson, Carter McGrath of Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
