January 27, 2011

SDN Staff Reports

Organizers of the Oktibbeha County’s 2011 Relay for Life are kickoff event tonight to get new and returning teams excited about this year’s event and the effort raise money to help fight cancer.
A kickoff meeting for the 2011 Relay is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the Sportsplex on Lynn Lane.
Those individuals or groups planning to have teams or are interested in having teams participate in this year’s Relay are urged to attend and learn more about what will be involved in this year’s event, which raises money to benefit the research, education, advocacy and patient support programs of the American Cancer Society, said Relay chair Diane Holloway.
The 2011 Relay for Life is scheduled for May 6 at the Starkville Sportsplex on Lynn Lane. The theme for this year’s event is “An Old-Fashioned County Fair: Remembering a Simpler Time Before Cancer.”
“Those interested in learning more about the Relay should come to this meeting on Thursday. In keeping with our theme this year, the kickoff on Thursday will have a bit of a county fair feel,” said Holloway.
“We’re going to get geared up for this year’s Relay and get everybody excited about raising money for the Cancer Society.”
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise money to support American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient assistance programs.
During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps around a track surrounded by booths and tents representing each team.
Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
Games, food and live entertainment are big part of the local Relay for Life event. But a primary focus is honoring cancer survivors and paying tribute to those who lost their battles with the disease.
The Relay for Life Steering Committee has set a $100,000 fund-raising goal for the 2010 event.
Over the past three years, the Oktibbeha County Relay has collectively raised more than $293,000 to benefit the Cancer Society.
Last year’s event raised a record $89,000.
The 2010 event saw a record 30 teams involved in the Relay, but Holloway and the Relay Steering Committee are hoping to have 50 teams participating and raising money for the 2010 event.
Those interested in getting involved with the Relay for Life can contact Team Recruitment Chair Lynn Shurden at 325-8918 or by e-mail at lshurden@advservices.msstate.edu or call Holloway at 418-0332 or send her e-mail at starkvillerelayforlife@yahoo.com or dianebbh@aol.com.
