Porter becomes scorer for State

February 6, 2011

Portia Porter is showing signs of being a reliable source for the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs in the scoring department.
The junior guard has gone from getting 18 points against Florida to scoring a career-high 30 points against Alabama.
Porter said of her play of late that she's just taking what opposing defenses are giving.
"I'm very confident," Porter said. "If I miss, I miss. I want to show my teammates and my coaches that I can get to the basket. If I've got it, I'll take it."
The Lady Bulldogs travel to Auburn today in search of their first Southeastern Conference victory. The tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
MSU women's coach Sharon Fanning-Otis has noticed Porter developing as a player in a positive way.
"Portia's energy is going to help us win as she makes better and better decisions with the ball in terms of shots, passing and where her teammates are, but that's true for all of us," Fanning-Otis said.
With the good comes the bad with Porter at times as she had nine turnovers against Florida.
Porter knows that she must play through her mistakes.
"When I do turn the ball over, I need to play hard so I can show my teammates and my coach that if I do make a turnover, I know how to get it back," Porter said. "I think my shooting has gotten better the last two games. I've been getting into the gym like they asked us to."
Porter wants to keep improving her shot as well as on defense and communicating with teammates.
Fanning-Otis knows Porter must continue to be committed to making adjustments, but doesn't find fault in her effort.
"I do want to compliment and say she has had energy and the focus to be there," Porter said. "She's going to have to keep learning the game. She has to do a better job of taking care of the basketball."
The Lady Bulldogs (8-13, 0-9) are looking to avenge a 45-41 loss to the Lady Tigers in Starkville on Jan. 20.
