Jogging directly benefits those who hit the pavement in several ways, but an upcoming event through First United Methodist Church will give runners the chance to help many others.
On March 6, the church will host a 5K run-walk and 1-mile fun run.
Organizers have a goal to raise $3,750 toward an effort via Stop Hunger Now to assemble 15,000 meal packs, which will combine rice, dehydrated vegetables, soy and a flavor mix which includes 21 minerals and vitamins. This will be the effort’s second year. Last year, participants packed 10,000 meals in about two hours.
Jane Windam is the church’s director at FUMC. The church’s Children’s Ministry is sponsoring the Stop Hunger Now effort. FUMC member Robin Remotigue is the project chair.
FUMC Administrator Lynn Berch is organizing the 5K with FUMC member Dawn Reynolds.
Pre-registration for the run will begin at 2 p.m. The race will start at 3 p.m. An awards presentation will take place at 5 p.m. with dinner – for a donation – to follow in the Christian Life Center.
Pre-registration for the race is $15 before March 4. The fee goes to $20 after March 4. Forms are available at the church office or via download at the church’s website, http://growasdisciples.com/, then should be dropped off at the church office with the registration fee or mailed to First United Methodist Church; P.O. Box 2585; Starkville, MS 39760.
All pre-race and race activities will take place in the FUMC parking lot on Meigs Street.
On March 27, organizers will gather at 1:30 p.m. in the CLC to pack the meals they buy.
Volunteers who want to help with the packing effort are welcome.
Organizers ask volunteers to call ahead to the church office at 323-5722.
