Magnolia Film Festival Saturday’s Line-up...

February 18, 2011

Patricia Chica, a judge in this year’s Magnolia Film Festival, shares tips Friday with those in attendance about what to do generate interest in film submissions. The “Mag” continues today with a series of events, including two film sessions.

Lecture, Q & A, book-signing with Sam Haskell

There will be a special lecture, question and answer session and book-signing with Sam Haskell today at 10 a.m. at Hollywood Premier Cinemas. The event is free and open to the public.
Amory native, Sam Haskell made his career in Hollywood by working his way up the ladder at the William Morris Agency one rung at a time. Starting in the mailroom and working his way to Executive Vice President and Worldwide Head of Television, Haskell used the lessons from his mother, Mary, to reach the top. Now retired from the entertainment business, Haskell has moved back to Oxford, MS with his wife, a former Miss Mississippi, Mary Donnelly Haskell. He currently serves as the chairman of Miss America and travels to promote his book, Promises I Made my Mother. In 2011, one of the stops on that book tour includes Starkville, MS at The Magnolia Independent Film Festival.
Haskell agreed to come speak at THE MAG about what it takes to make it in the entertainment industry. His trials, though, are much like many of our own. His story begins in a small Mississippi town and included hurdles because of his Southern upbringing. But Haskell learned to use those Southern traits to his advantage, “yes sir” and “yes ma’am”-ing his way into the offices of people who held the power.
Haskell’s discussion will be followed by a book signing for Promises “I Made my Mother.” The books will be priced at $25 each and all profits will be donated to The Magnolia Independent Film Festival.
