Arts Council to stage warm-ups for Garden Expo

As a prelude to the Everything Garden Expo set for March 5-6 at the Mississippi Horse Park, the Starkville Arts Council has arranged for three brown bag luncheons next week at The Book Mart in downtown Starkville.
The sessions will be conducted from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day. Boxed lunches will be available for $8, but they should be reserved in advance by calling 323-2844 by noon Monday, February 28.
The discussion schedule is as follows:
• Wednesday, March 2: Viking Chef Vicki Leach will conduct a program on "Cooking with Garden Herbs." She is also an instructor in the MUW Culinary Arts program.
• Thursday, March 3: Local resident and "birder" Margaret Copeland will discuss "Butterflies and Hummingbirds in your Garden."
• Friday, March 4: Monti King of Flowers by the Bunch will demonstrate the "Art of Arranging Flowers from your Garden."
Also on March 4, the Arts in Public Places Committee of the Starkville Area Arts Council will hold a wine and cheese reception from 5:30 - 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Greater Starkville Development Partnership (GSDP). The occasion will serve as a grand opening for the garden themed March exhibit of local artists. It will remain in place until April 29.
The Everything Garden Expo which opens Saturday, March 5, is sponsored by the Starkville Area Arts Council and Mississippi State University. Other major sponsors include the MSU Extension Service, the Mississippi Horse Park, and the Mississippi Arts Commission.
Show hours are 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 5; and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 6. Admission is $5 per person, and children six and under will be admitted free.
Some 60 booths have already been reserved by vendors who will be showing and selling equipment, plant materials and garden art. There will also be numerous educational seminars and programs for children of all ages. For more information call 324-3080.

Gardeners: “Taking it to the Streets”

The Starkville Area Arts Council (SAAC) is calling for area businesses to enter the Everything Garden Expo Window Showcase competition now underway.
“We are challenging businesses to use their originality and creativity to help promote the upcoming “Everything Garden Expo” scheduled for March 5-6 at the Mississippi Horse Park in Starkville,” said Ali Jones, a director of the Starkville Area Arts Council. “We encourage businesses to decorate their store fronts with a gardening theme to highlight our third annual garden expo.”
The winning entry will receive two tickets to the SAAC Fall Gala ($150 value). Second place will be awarded $50 cash and third place will receive $25 cash.
