The Starkville Foundation for Public Education has exceeded its goal for 2010 and raised over $25,000.
The funds raised will assist in rewarding $10,000 in scholarships and $10,000 in teacher grants to students and faculty of the Starkville School District in 2011 as well as funding for special projects.
“We are extremely proud of the community of Starkville, who came through for us during our fundraising efforts this past year,” said Kathy Marcum, Chair of Student Scholarships.
Starkville School District graduates may apply for one or more of the scholarships based on specific criteria. SFPE recognized the need to encourage all students to achieve beyond graduation and have included scholarships based on academic improvement, financial need, academic success, and school involvement.
Teacher grants have funded a variety of projects in the past. These projects include the Gaining Ground Environmental Grants which supports activities, fieldtrips and speakers that promote the required science curriculum and an awareness of the environment, as well as the Go Play Outdoor Grants that encourage learning and educational opportunities outside. SFPE grants are open to all Starkville School District educators and include individual classroom grants funded up to $750 as well as collaborative general grants up to $1750. Donations raised through the SFPE Music Legacy Concert have funded a new grant specifically focused on integrating music in the classroom.
Additionally, the Starkville Foundation for Public Education is now accepting Hall of the Famous nominations to honor Starkville High School and Henderson High School alumni prior to 1986. Last year’s distinguished honorees, Dr. Josey and Dr. Sills, were celebrated at the spring reception with SFPE student scholarship recipients and their families.
“We have inducted doctors, lawyers, teachers, military personnel, a congresswoman and many others since 1992. We recognize people who have exceeded and excelled in their professions and in their community,” said Laura Bryan, Chair of Hall of the Famous.
Applications for teacher grants and Hall of the Famous nominations are due March 22 and student scholarship applications are due March 29. All applications can be downloaded from the Starkville Foundation For Public Education’s website at http://www.starkvillefoundation.org
