NEW HOPE – New Hope overcame an early deficit to surge past Starkville 12-6 Tuesday night.
The hosting Trojans trailed the Yellowjackets 4-0 heading to the home half of the fourth inning before battling back into the game.
Starkville (2-1) put up single runs in the first and third innings before adding a pair in the fourth to earn the early advantage, but New Hope scored three times in the fourth and five times in the fifth to go up 8-4.
The Jackets closed the gap to 8-6 in the sixth before the Trojans capped the scoring with a four-spot in their half.
Four Starkville pitchers combined to walk nine total New Hope batters while striking out 11.
Hayden Higginbotham took the loss for the Jackets in relief of starting pitcher Nick Brooks.
Starkville was also hindered by three errors, along with 15 total strikeouts on the offensive side.
Blake Dawkins and Nathan Pugh paced the Jackets at the plate with two hits apiece.
Jordan Allgood added a double for Starkville.
The Jackets return to action Friday with a 6 p.m. home game against Meridian.
A junior varsity game will precede the varsity game at 4 p.m.
