It's still bowl season for football.
When it comes to the Charity Bowl, the payout goes to a good cause and not the teams involved.
Kappa Sigma Fraternity of Mississippi State is scheduled to play against Sigma Chi Fraternity Saturday at Starkville High School with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
According to Jim Hunter Walsh, a Kappa Sigma Alumnus from MSU and a coach, said the Charity Bowl actually originated at Ole Miss.
The fraternity from Ole Miss invited MSU's Kappa Sigma Fraternity to play in the Charity Bowl.
Once Kappa Sigma participated the first year, it was hooked.
"It was something very interesting for us so we brought it to Mississippi State and started it here," Hunter said. "We play another fraternity on campus and they don't do bids, but they will go out and take a look at the interest among other fraternities and those fraternities say they are willing to raise a certain amount of money for your charity to play in this game."
The Charity Bowl is a full-pads football game and the teams involved usually practice from a month and a half to a month.
"They start out in shorts and helmets then eventually get into the pads," Hunter said.
Kappa Sigma identifies a local charity to benefit from the Charity Bowl, whether it's a needy family or needy individual in the Starkville area or even somebody who is a family member of a Kappa Sigma member that needs something that they normally couldn't provide for themselves as far as health issues are concerned.
"We do this to generate community support and involvement," Hunter said. "For a couple of years, we gave it to the Catch-A-Dream Foundation which is based on Mississippi State's campus and they do a lot of work with Mossy Oak. It's something we found that was local and a good charity. We built a good relationship with them."
This year, the Charity Bowl will benefit Fisher House and Magnolia Speech School.
The Fisher House is the national charity organization that Kappa Sigma National Fraternity supports so it was an obvious choice to get the Charity Bowl's help.
Over $45,000 has been raised for this year's charity so far.
