The weather conditions may have been cool and damp at the Mississippi State Golf Course Monday afternoon, but it didn't seem to hamper the Starkville High School golf team.
The Yellowjackets bettered the performance of their previous two meets by five strokes by shooting a 165 in a three-team meet including Kosciusko and New Hope.
Starkville's score was seven strokes better than Kosciusko's 172 and New Hope carded a 176.
The Jackets are beginning to show the kind of improvement that coach Sam Bryant wants to see.
"We're starting to find where we stand score-wise and we are shooting that pretty consistently," Bryant said. "We want to see a little more strokes go off and they can. They have a little room to improve. I think it's going to come down to short game. That's where we are going to be able to shave our strokes."
As far as the cooler than normal temperatures for late March, Bryant didn't think it was a major factor in the outcome.
"It might give them the mindset of having to concentrate," Bryant said. "They were probably thinking it's cold so golf is the only thing they are thinking about right now to fight off the cold. I don't think the conditions were any better or worse than it was, but it may have helped them focus."
Ryan Lacy and Logan Maddox shared co-medalist honors for SHS by each shooting a 38 and Ben Newman continued his consistent play with a 39.
"They are our top three golfers so that's what I expect from them," Bryant said. "They are very capable of doing that match-in and match-out. If they can score low, it takes pressure off four and five and frees them up a little bit. That's the quality golf I'm looking for."
Jace Hobart carded a 50 and Cameron Maddox shot a 54 for the Jackets.
Starkville travels to Tupelo Thursday for its next match.
