SHS blanked by South Panola in division game

Since spring break, the Starkville High softball team has been riding high and racking up the wins.
Thursday, the Lady Yellowjackets' momentum was slowed by a dominant performance from South Panola.
Despite having won four of their previous five games coming in, the Lady Jackets didn't record a hit in falling at home to the Lady Tigers 16-0 in a mercy-rule shortened, four-inning game.
"We made a lot of errors," said SHS head coach Mimi Milling. "Some (team members) gave up. Some didn't. It's all just a mental thing with (the team). They hear 'South Panola' and it goes downhill from there."
The Lady Tigers (8-7, 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 2) never let up offensively against SHS starting pitcher Jadee Sexton, who was saddled with the loss.
"South Panola just rocked our world," said Milling. "We did make some errors, but they hit the ball."
While the Lady Tigers had their way with the Lady Jackets Thursday, few other teams have had such luck of late.
Since March 15, Starkville has beaten Columbus, Meridian, Vardaman and Weir.
The Lady Jackets' only loss in that time frame came on the road at Houston prior to dropping Thursday's decision.
While Starkville (4-7, 1-1 in Class 6A, Region 2) attempts to bounce back from the South Panola loss, history is on the Lady Jackets' side.
Starkville began the year by dropping its first five games before turning things around earlier this month.
Milling has no doubts her team will again put adversity behind them.
"I think we're still ready to fight," said Milling. "South Panola is just a top-notch team and, like I said, it was all just mental against them."
Milling doesn't think her team's mindset will be an issue when they travel to face Tupelo today at 5 p.m.
"In the past, when Tupelo has beaten us, they've just beaten us, it wasn't due to errors," said Milling. "I think as long as we don't let (Thursday's game) bother us, we'll be alright."
