For those wanting to take part in the annual Parade of Flags, be at the Allen Hall side of the Mississippi State University Drill Field by 10:45 a.m. today.
The 21st Annual International Fiesta’s Parade of Flags is open to children and adults of any culture. This parade will cross the MSU Drill Field at 11 a.m. and will be the opening event for the Fiesta.
“To me the parade of flags crossing the drill field is a wonderful sight,” said Joan Mylroie, one of the organizers for the Fiesta. “The multi-colored flags and the beautiful clothing from around the world is fantastic.”
There are 140 flags in the parade, representing the home countries of people living and working in Starkville and Oktibbeha County. The Fiesta will also feature food and entertainment from around the world.
New to this year’s event will be entertainers from Nepal and the KMG Dance group of Starkville will be doing a patriotic dance interpretation.
Lisa Dakhlallah, one of the organizers for this year’s Fiesta, said this year’s Fiesta is expected to have some amazing food.
This year, 18 international student organizations will have booths set up on the MSU Drill Field. Food from Mexico, Russia, the Middle East and around the world will be available at this year’s event. Each organization will sell food to raise money for the individual association represented, and organizers encourage visitors to bring change and small bills to help the vendors at today’s events. Dakhlallah said vendors will sell food until everything in gone, but visitors should arrive around 11 a.m. for a wide variety of food.
Ruth de la Cruz, one of the organizers for this year’s event and one of the original founders of the International Fiesta, said the event has grown and is now a traditional April event in the community.
There are always numerous activities for children at the annual event. Children’s games will run from noon until 2 p.m., with the pinata at 1 p.m.  We will have the “inflatable” for children to enjoy from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
