Starkville Academy loses home match to Washington

April 12, 2011

Starkville Academy tennis coach Lynn Moorehead believes she has an improving team.
Tuesday's match against the visiting Washington School Generals could help support that claim.
Even though the Volunteers lost an 8-1 decision to the Generals, three of the individual matches went to a third-set tiebreaker, meaning that a break or two could have resulted in wins for SA.
"We're building a team here at Starkville Academy and we have improved since last year," Moorhead said. "We're winning some of the matches. We had our first school-match win against Winston Academy so I'm really proud of them. We've got some young 7th graders that have stepped up and everyone in general has improved."
It's believed the victory against Winston Academy earlier this season was the first for the Vols in five years.
Against Washington, Anna Andrews picked up the only individual win for Starkville Academy by beating Caroline France 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 girls singles.
The Vols, who lost third-set tiebreakers, were James McKell in No. 2 boys singles 6-2, 2-6, 3-10, Jake Goodwin and Jamison McKee in No. 2 boys doubles 7-6, 3-6, 6-10, and Logan Crosland and Mary Austin Barber in mixed doubles 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 3-10.
The other losses for Starkville Academy were Harrison Warren in No. 1 boys singles 1-6, 1-6, Abbie Vaughn in No. 1 girls singles 2-6, 1-6, Alex Vaughn and Will Christiansen in No. 1 boys doubles 0-6, 1-6, Beth Hester and Kacey Faver 2-6, 3-6 in No. 1 girls doubles, and Anatasia Kasper and Kali Burney 0-6, 0-6 in No. 2 girls doubles.
The Volunteers will recognized Senior Day in their next home match on April 19, then travel to Lee Academy the next day to close out the regular season.
