The Starkville School District Board of Trustees has called a special meeting Wednesday, April 27 at 12 p.m. at the Greensboro Center.
Officials declined to confirm whether the meeting would address the “indefinite leave of absence” by SSD Superintendent Judy Couey.
But the meeting is in response to a special call meeting the board held Wednesday, April 20, which resulted in an executive session in which the board discussed a personnel matter, but would not go into further detail.
“The Starkville School District Board of Trustees recognizes the enormous responsibility it has to the administrators, teachers, students, parents and community, and the board is committed to fulfilling its obligation to provide the best education possible in an environment that fosters learning,” said Nicole Thomas, public information officer for the SSD. “The board cannot, however, disclose the reasons for its most recent actions in executive session as it involves a personnel matter, and legally, the board is unable to provide further details.”
Speculation arose as to the nature of the personnel matter when board President Pickett Wilson stated that Couey is on indefinite leave following the April 20 meeting.
Thomas added, “The board is confident in the building level leadership at each school. SSD’s Assistant Superintendents, Dr. Walter Gonsoulin and Dr. Beth Sewell, will continue to provide direction and support to the schools and other departments under their supervision.”
“Our schools and our children are in very capable hands,” Wilson added  “Our administrators and teachers are focused on teaching and learning, and they will continue to be until the end of school.”
