MANTACHIE – The Mantachie Mustangs scored four runs in the first inning to spark themselves to a 6-2 win over East Webster Friday night in the Class 2A baseball playoffs.
The victory gives Mantachie a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three, third-round series.
"We didn't play bad, we just didn't play good enough to win," said East Webster head coach Wes Johnson. "But (today) is a new day. We can beat them twice."
On Friday, the Wolverines (19-7) found themselves unable to muster much offense.
Jamie McKee recorded a pair of doubles for East Webster while Hayden Hendrix and Austin Halford also had hits.
"(Mantachie's) pitcher did a good job of throwing strikes and didn't walk anyone," said Johnson.
Pitcher Ty Hendrix hurled a complete game for East Webster, but was saddled with the loss.
The Wolverines will attempt to even things up against the Mustangs today at 1 p.m. East Webster is hosting the game in Houston due to the storm damage on their campus in Cumberland.
If the Wolverines win today, the third game of the series will be played in Mantachie on Monday.
Whoever advances will go on to play either Eupora or Hamilton in the North State finals.
