Charlie Smith knows Devin Mitchell has to split his time between three sports for the Starkville Yellowjackets.
As the coach for Starkville High School's summer league team, Smith likes the fact he gets to watch Mitchell run around the bases.
Mitchell had a triple, two singles and drove in four runs to help the Jackets defeat the New Hope No. 2 team Trojans 13-6 Monday afternoon.
With also football and track on the table, Smith believes Mitchell could be a really good baseball player if he devoted all of his time to that.
"He's got a lot of irons in the fire, but he has a chance to be real good at this game right here," Smith said. "I don't know how good he'll be at track because I've never seen him run, but I know he runs fast. I know he's good in football, but he can be really, really, really good in baseball."
Mitchell drove in Starkville's first run with a triple in the first inning, but added an RBI single in the second and a two-run single in the third.
The final single came in a nine-run outburst that helped the Jackets come from behind.
"I'm real proud of him," Smith said. "He swung the bat well the other night and swung it well tonight. He just needs a lot of playing time."
Starkville's only other multiple hitter was Harper Day with a double and a single, while Victor Johnson added a double for the other extra base hit. Jordan Allgood and Daniel Murphree had one single each.
Although pleased to see his squad swing the bats well and rally for a win, the lack of defense concerned Smith.
"Our problem is out of all the runs we gave up were unearned," Smith said. "We didn't play very good defense. We don't have a lot of kids with us right now and we're playing some kids where they haven't practiced, but fielding a ground ball is fielding a ground ball and we've got to do a better job. In 16 innings that's probably 11 errors for us and that's not very good right now."
