A Weir man has been arrested in an attempted robbery and stabbing at Shipley’s Do-Nuts early Tuesday morning.
George Johnson, 21, of 3020 Pisgah Road, Weir, entered Shipley’s Doughnuts at approximately 6 a.m., pulled a knife on a female employee and demanded money. He cut her throat while attempting to rob her. Several other employees heard the woman’s call for help and rushed to the front of the store to find Johnson standing over her with his hands on her throat.
A male employee attempted to stop Johnson from assaulting the female, but Johnson began attacking him with the knife, cutting him on the throat. The male employee hit Johnson over the head with a piece of equipment used in the shop before he fled the scene. He was not able to get into the cash register and did not get away with any money, said Lt. Mark Ballard.
Both employees were transported to OCH Regional Medical Center. The female employee underwent surgery and is in stable condition. The male was treated and released.
“The crime was reported to us at 6:10 a.m. and we responded. We were able to develop some information that lead to the identification of the suspect,” Starkville Police Chief David Lindley said. “We found him walking on Highway 25 and arrested him at 7:15 a.m.”
Johnson was found walking Highway 25 South at approximately 7:15 a.m.
“He did not respond to officers’ commands to show his hands, and he was tased,” Ballard said. There is no indication that Johnson was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Johnson is charged with armed robbery and two counts of aggravated assault. His bond has not been set as of press time Tuesday.
“We feel fortunate that we were able to take him into custody as quickly as possible and that the victims were not hurt any worse than they were,” Lindley said.
