Pastry chefs in the making

June 19, 2011

TLC has “Cake Boss.” The Food Network has “Ace of Cakes.” And now, Starkville has 13 young pastry chefs in the making.
Main Street Arts, in conjunction with Mississippi Sate University’s Division of Academic Outreach and Continuing Education, hosted the “So You Want to Be a Cake Boss” camp last week.
The camp focused more on decorating techniques using fondant and icing, including piping borders and sculpting flowers. They worked on both cupcakes and small, individual cakes that were already baked and ready to decorate.
“We wanted to teach them some basics that they could take and use at home, too,” said Linda Wade. “We didn’t want to give them step-by-step projects. Each cake will have a little bit of their own personality.”
Angel White helped the girls create some beautiful treats, like bulldog cupcakes and rose covered cakes.
“The kids have had a blast,” she said.
Main Street Arts will host another session of the “So You Want to Be a Cake Boss” camp in July for children ages 6-9 and 10-15. The three day camp costs $99 for children ages 6-9 and $125 for ages 10-15. If your child is interested in participating, contact Linda Wade at (662) 323-1140.
