In announcing his candidacy for sheriff, Charles R. Sanders said, “To the citizens of Oktibbeha County: Thank you for your overwhelming support as I make my bid for Sheriff. I will bring to you over 30 years of experience serving the public in a management position, in both emergency and non-emergency situations. I have many years of diversified and specialized training and would like to put this experience to work for you. I will hold firm to my professional training and knowledge to assure you that my staff and I will provide professional, courteous, and firm law enforcement. I will consider it an honor and a privilege to serve as your next sheriff.
“Oktibbeha County is where I was born and raised. As a young adult, I began my career by serving our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the military, I went to work for the City of Memphis, Tenn. fire department and retired from the position of fire chief completing 25 years of service.
“Following my retirement from the Memphis fire department, I filled the position of Auxiliary Deputy of Oktibbeha County for approximately eight years. During the past 10 years, I have been employed with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, managing both the Oktibbeha County Lake and Black Prairie Wildlife Management Area in Lowndes County.
Notwithstanding our educational facilities, the most important feature people consider when planning relocation to our county, is the safety of the area. It is my goal, and will be that of the Sheriff’s department, to make a significant impact on the reduction of crime and the illegal use and distribution of drugs in Oktibbeha County, thereby making the area a safe and desirable place to live. We will face these challenges head-on by staying abreast of our ever-changing laws and by cooperating with other law enforcement agencies (local, state, and federal). I will welcome your comments and suggestions on improving the services and outreach of the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office. Again, I offer you the background of experience, education, training, and focus to serve as your sheriff. If I do not get around to seeing everyone personally, I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your continued prayers and support in the upcoming August 2 Democratic primary by casting your vote for me.”
