Supes concerned over education building design

July 16, 2011

The Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors will hear an update from the education building’s chief architect on the project’s status and schedule Monday during its regular meeting.
In the board’s previous meeting this month, supervisors voiced concerns over the quality of work and craftsmanship. Project Architect Roger Pryor is scheduled to update the board about the project at 10:15 a.m., according to the board agenda.
“Our main concern is we don’t want to accept the building or have its personnel move in and then have to return for more work,” Young said. “It’s hard to get contractors back in (after personnel move in).”
During the previous Oktibbeha County School District board meeting, Superintendent James Covington said the district’s central office would move into the building by July 29. At that time, the contractor had not acquired a certificate of occupancy from the city and several issues with the building remained.
“It’s been a lot of cosmetic things where they’re going to have to come back and level some things off, do some painting, correct some signage — just some punch list things,” Covington said during the previous OCSD meeting. “Not major structural things, just some cosmetic kind of items.”
The previous county school building received severe damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. District offices were then moved to 800-A Louisville St.
In other board business, the district will:
• Receive an update from the Heritage Museum;
• Order to approve application for a volunteer fire department rating for the county;
• Hear a hospital board appointment;
• Handle other county business, including payroll changes and ROW requests;
• Receive a county road update.
