Three murder trials scheduled in Circuit Court term

July 24, 2011

Oktibbeha County Circuit Court will begin hearing criminal court cases Monday during its July term.
Over 200 sentencing, revocations, hearings and trials are tentatively scheduled on the docket from Monday through Aug. 5, and those are divided between Judge Lee J. Howard, Judge Jim Kitchens and Judge Lee Coleman.
According to a schedule provided by Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis, Judge Howard is tentatively scheduled to hear two murder trials — Mississippi vs. Verina Childs and Mississippi vs. Floyd Robinson — while Judge Kitchens is scheduled to hear one — Mississippi vs. Steven Love.
Childs is accused of shooting her husband, Douglas Childs, in November 2009 while he was hunting near the couple’s home. She was arrested three days later by the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department.
Child’s trial has been continued repeatedly since the shooting. Her trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 1.
Robinson was sentenced to life in prison after a jury convicted him of the 2005 shooting death of Bridget Moore in 2007. He was granted a retrial after a 5-4 vote by the Mississippi Court of Appeals. The court decided a video taped interrogation which referred to allegations of domestic violence from a previous girlfriend was inadmissible evidence.
Robinson’s trial was scheduled for earlier this year, but also continued. His trial is set for Aug. 1.
Love’s trial was scheduled for the court’s April term, but continued to the summer after he switched legal representation. Love is on trial for the 2008 death of William C. Brown. His trial is scheduled for July 26.
The July docket also includes numerous armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and forgery counts. Over 60 charges are also on the docket, and vary from the sale and manufacture of controlled substances to possession of precursors.
