Oktibbeha Co. School Board to present budget

July 31, 2011

The Oktibbeha County School Board will hold a public hearing on the district’s budget for the 2011-2012 school year before their regularly scheduled meeting tonight.
Though Oktibbeha County schools’ Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) allocation is up over $68,000 from last year due to increased enrollment, the district is still underfunded by almost half a million dollars. Last spring, Superintendent James Covington said that he hoped to use the extra funding to reduce class sizes.
Tonight’s hearing will give the public the chance to see the district’s financial plans for the upcoming school year and give feedback to the board.
The budget hearing will begin at 5 p.m. and the regular meeting will follow immediately afterward. This will be the last board meeting before the schools reopen for the new school year. Both meetings are open to the public.
Though the superintendent’s office is in the process of moving to their new building, the meeting will be held at the old office at 800-A Louisville Street in Starkville.
The board plans to approve the budget next Monday during a special meeting.
