County education building to receive final inspection

July 31, 2011

After over a month of delays, the new Oktibbeha County educational building will receive one final walkthrough today by county officials.
The building, located at 106 Main Street in Starkville, will become the new home of the superintendent’s office.
The office was originally scheduled to move at the end of June, but an inspection revealed the building had a large number of deficiencies.
Pryor and Morrow Architects and Engineers drafted a list of over 300 cosmetic and interior-specific problems, including paint touch-ups and sheetrock work, 21 general observations and 60 mechanical and electrical notes.
Within two weeks, the majority of the issues were addressed by the project’s contractors, Anco Construction, Inc., and that list was narrowed down to 20 cosmetic issues. This second report listed exterior signage not in place and loose brick mould around the windows among some of the problems that were not yet fixed.
As of the July 23 inspection, Pryor and Morrow, Oktibbeha County Superintendent James Covington and Board of Supervisors President Marvell Howard found that only a few, minor cosmetic problems remained.
“The contractors have worked the list down to fewer than 10 percent of the original problems, and it is a very high quality building,” Architect Roger Pryor said.
Though the initial number of deficiencies was well out of the normal range for this type of project, Howard said he was pleased with the contractor’s commitment to making it right.
“He has been very cooperative. He’s made sure that he’s been on top of things,” Howard said. “He gave his word that everything would be taken care of.”
Providing today’s inspection goes well, Howard said the district office should be able to move in right away.
