RIDGELAND – The Starkville High volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday at the Set It Off Challenge at Ridgeland High School, defeating Jim Hill in straight sets before losing in straight sets to Lake Cormorant.
"It really looked like we were having fun out there," said SHS head coach Lauren Love of her team's day. "They were having fun, playing as a team, communicating and hustling. It was great to see them play like that together."
Saturday's results put the Lady Yellowjackets at 1-3 overall for the young season after falling to Our Lady Academy and DeSoto Central on Friday.
On Saturday, SHS quickly rebounded from those losses however, turning away Jim Hill 25-7 and 25-14. Wheeler Richardson tallied four aces in that contest to go along with seven points, three kills and three assists. April Reese added three aces, 15 points and three digs, while Vivian Barksdale recorded three aces, 10 points, a kill and a dig.
In Saturday's second match, Lake Cormorant defeated SHS 25-14 and 25-23. Starkville's Khristian Carr had five kills and six digs in the contest while Michaela Mills added two points and seven digs, Grace Drumheller tallied a kill and four digs and Richardson had four points, a kill, four assists and seven digs.
Margaret Allison also contributed two points and two digs for the Lady Jackets, who are scheduled to return to action on Thursday at Aberdeen.
Love says she is looking forward to the season continuing after what she believes was a productive opening weekend overall.
"I didn't know what to expect coming into the weekend," said Love. "I knew what we could do in practice, but you always learn lots of things about your team and about the girls when it comes match time. I learned we can definitely step up in the exciting times, but we also need to stay focused, play hard and play together to get the ball on our side."
