Momentum building for SHS with Tuesday's victory

August 23, 2011

From Staff Reports

AMORY – Momentum is building for the Starkville High volleyball team. On the heels of the Lady Yellowjackets' two division wins Saturday at a district tri-match in Canton, SHS kept things rolling Tuesday with a non-division victory in Amory.
The Lady Jackets put away the Lady Panthers in four sets, winning the first two 25-12 and 25-10, then dropping the third set 25-21 before recovering to take the fourth set 25-10.
"Amory played tough," said SHS head coach Lauren Love. "They hustled and brought the ball back to our side. The third set, we didn't take care of our side and had a number of unforced errors, but it was great to come back in the fourth set, connect well with our passing and see our setters find our hitters.
"I'm proud of the girls for staying focused and taking care of business."
Wheeler Richardson's performance keyed Starkville in the match, as the senior had eight aces, five kills, 12 assists and six digs.
Khristian Carr also had a big night for the Lady Jackets with nine aces, eight kills, one block and seven digs.
Jamiyah Covington added six digs and two aces for SHS.
"(Covington's) digs were huge for us," said Love.
April Reese aided the Lady Jackets with two aces, eight kills and nine digs, while Michaela Mills had five aces, three kills, four assists and six digs for the Lady Jackets.
The win moves Starkville to 6-4 overall for the season.
SHS returns to play Thursday by hosting Caledonia at the Starkville Sportsplex.
The action will begin with a 5:30 p.m. junior varsity match.
Love hopes her club can maintain its winning ways against the Lady Confederates.
"We hope that the momentum can carry over against Caledonia," said Love. "(Caledonia coach Samantha Brooks) always works her girls hard. We like playing teams that challenge us and Thursday will be a challenge."
