Late comeback attempt falls short for Ackerman

August 27, 2011

From Staff Reports

WINONA – A late Ackerman comeback attempt fell just short Friday night in Winona as the Indians fell to the Tigers 34-28.
Ackerman (1-1) dug themselves a 21-7 hole after the first half, then saw their deficit grow to 28-7 on the opening drive of the second half.
"We didn't play like I think we should have early on," said Ackerman head coach Adam Dillinger. "But the kids fought from there and we didn't give up. We had the ball with about two minutes left and gave ourself the chance to make a play and win it. We just didn't this week."
Winona improved its record to 1-1 this season with the win.
Ackerman, who notched a win last week for the first time since last season's opening game, fell to 1-1.
Even in defeat, Ackerman received big offensive performances from running back K.J. Woods, quarterback Dakota Brasher and receiver Quinton Lane.
Woods carried the ball 33 times for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while Brasher ran for a touchdown in addition to going 11-of-23 passing for 148 yards.
Lane caught four passes for 86 yards.
The Ackerman loss marked the second-straight contest that the Indians have surrendered at least 33 points in a game following last week's 36-33 triumph over Noxapater.
Dillinger said the Winona offense deserves credit for their work in Friday night's game, but his defense still must find ways to improve.
"Winona played a great ballgame and they came out, were physical, and a lot of credit goes to them," said Dillinger. "But I think we've still got work to do. We're going to get there. We're going to keep plugging away and get better on (the defensive) side of the ball. We've got to be able to make 28 points count. If we can score 28, we've got to get a 'W' out of it."
The Indians will look to rebound next week when they travel to face county rival French Camp.
