MABEN – "Smith to Quinn" was the theme for West Oktibbeha's home opener.
Junior quarterback Von Smith and senior wide receiver Dwight Quinn were on the same page in the Timberwolves 50-30 win over Montgomery County.
The duo connected seven times for 319 yards and four touchdowns, most of which came in the first half.
"I'm very proud of how they played," said head coach Adam Lowrey. "I was proud to see how the offense was clicking tonight, and we got our throwing game back on track."
Quinn is Smith's favorite target and rightfully so with their on field connection and Smith's opinion of him.
"He is an excellent receiver and is one of the best in the country," said Smith. "He came ready to play tonight."
Smith also connected with Drake Powell for a touchdown and finished the night 20 of 23 with 532 yards and five passing touchdowns. He also did some work on his feet with three carries for 32 yards and one touchdown, but he credits his success to his linemen.
"I always feel good when I step on the field behind my line," said Smith. "I felt really comfortable tonight because we practice our blocking schemes all the time and I know they will block for me."
The Timberwolves had some leg cramp issues in their season opening win on the road last week, but with linemen playing on both sides of the ball they were prepared for the long haul this week.
"I'm proud of my big guys, they withstood the game going both ways with zero cramps," said Lowrey. "I'm proud of the entire offensive and defensive line."
The game started with the Hornets putting together a 10-play drive that the Timberwolves ended on their 6-yard line.
With 94 yards of field ahead of them, the Timberwolves offense found the other end of the field on only two plays. Smith hit Shun Fair for a 6-yard gain on the first play and then hit Quinn for an 88 yard touchdown play.
On their next offensive possession, Smith found Quinn again, but this time for a 29-yard touchdown that gave the Timberwolves a 12-0 lead.
Montgomery County found their way into the end zone early in the second quarter, but that was all they could get in the first half as two of their drives were ended by Smith interceptions, one by a Donovan Henderson fumble recovery and the rest by good overall defense.
The Timberwolves scored 22 unanswered points to end the first half highlighted with Smith finding Quinn for two more touchdowns and at halftime, they held a 34-8 lead.
That lead was quickly extended in the second half when Smith ran in from 25 yards out to extend West Oktibbeha's lead to 42-8 with 8:48 left in the third quarter.
The momentum of the game began to change after that as the Hornets held on to ball for almost the remainder of the game as they recovered two onside kicks and scored three touchdowns to cut the lead down to 42-30 with 7:03 left in the game.
With their lead cut down to 12 points, the Timberwolves finally sent their offense back onto the field. This drive showcased a little of the "Smith to Quinn" show, but it was Tiberius Lampkin who found his way into the end zone from 4 yards out.
The touchdown sealed the deal for West Oktibbeha and they are now 2-0 for the season as they head into an off week.
"I got to give God the glory for everything good and bad tonight," said defensive coach Kelvin Cistrunk. "We shut them down the first half, but the momentum changed. They put up some points in the second half, but we got the win."
After their off week, the Timberwolves will host Eupora under the Thursday night lights on September 8 at 7 p.m.
