Miss. lending hand to Irene response

August 27, 2011

BILOXI (AP) — Mississippi Power Co., the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the south Mississippi chapter of the American Red Cross have sent workers to help with Hurricane Irene.
The Sun Herald said 60 Mississippi Power employees left Friday for a two-day drive to Washington. They’ll be helping Pepco Holdings Inc., a major energy company serving the mid-Atlantic region. The workers include line crews and support personnel.
State emergency management response director Tom McAllister will be in Washington for two weeks to help coordinate resources in a national response effort.
The South Mississippi chapter of the American Red Cross deployed two emergency response vehicles to the coast of North Carolina on Thursday. The mobile units will be able to get hot meals, water, ice, clean-up kits and other supplies to areas affected by the hurricane, said Red Cross spokeswoman Megan Burkes.
Hurricane Irene opened its assault on the Eastern Seaboard on Saturday by lashing the North Carolina coast with wind as strong as 115 mph and pounding shoreline homes with waves. Farther north, authorities readied a massive shutdown of trains and airports, with 2 million people ordered out of the way. At least three people died because of the storm.
The center of the storm, which was estimated to be some 500 miles wide, passed over North Carolina’s Outer Banks for its official landfall just after 7:30 a.m. EDT. The hurricane’s vast reach traced the East Coast from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to just below Cape Cod. Tropical storm conditions battered Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, with the worst to come.
