In an effort to make sure Starkville lives up to its title of Mississippi’s “Healthiest Hometown,” one local woman organized a week of free exercise activities for the whole city.
“I’m a teacher, so I’ve noticed that a lot of the kids are becoming obese and Mississippi is still ranked the highest for obesity in the United States. I wanted a way to allow people to be familiar and understand what’s available to them within the city,” Hillary Cassibry said. “When I first moved up here, I wasn’t aware of hardly anything that was available as far as group exercise. A lot of people do better when they’re able to exercise in a group and have that person there that’s motivating them. This will be a way for people to find that group that they can fit in with as far as needs of exercise.”
Cassibry organized the very first Get Fit Starkville week — five days of easy and free outdoor exercise activities. All the events start in the evening and Cassibry said will be great for families looking to get outside and be active.
The first three events will start at Boardtown Bikes at 6 p.m. daily. Monday will kick off the week with a mountain bike trail ride.
Tuesday will feature a two or six mile run around Starkville. All running levels are more than welcome to attend.
“If people come and say they can’t do two miles, we can start a group for maybe a half mile or one mile. It’s totally flexible,” Cassibry said.
Wednesday’s event will be a bike ride around Starkville. On Thursday, everyone is invited to visit one of their local parks to get outside and play. To view a complete list of parks in Starkville, visit http://www.starkvilleparks.com.
The final event will be on Friday with Starkville in Motion’s bike to work day.
The ride will begin at First United Methodist Church at 7:15 a.m. and end at the student union on the Mississippi State University campus.
