Judge reduces Prince’s bond to $50,000

September 1, 2011

The aggravated assault case against a Mississippi State University student who stands accused of stabbing a fellow student has been handed over to the Oktibbeha County grand jury.
William Daniel Prince, 25, of 109 Locksley Way, Polo’s Apartments, Starkville, was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing Joseph Ryan Davis outside of Rock Bottom Bar and Grill last weekend.
Judge Rodney P. Faver originally set Prince’s bond at $500,000 because it was unclear whether Davis would survive his injuries. Court Administrator Tony Rook said Prince’s bond was reduced Wednesday to $50,000 after Faver learned more about his history and ties to the community.
The defense attorneys, Tommy Savant and co-council Jay Perry, waived the right to a preliminary hearing, and the case has been bonded over to the Oktibbeha County grand jury. The case will not go to trial until 2012.
Officials from Clay County Jail said bond had not been posted and Prince remained in custody.
Bart Lucius, Rock Bottom manager, said three customers — including Prince — were removed from Rock Bottom at approximately 11:45 p.m. on the night of the attack.
Lucius said the three individuals walked to the street from the bar, turned around and confronted a security guard. Seeing the three-on-one situation, Lucius said. Davis, who is also a MSU student, jumped from the front of the bar down to the sidewalk area to help the security guard. Punches were thrown by both Davis and Prince, he said.
In Lucius’ statement to law enforcement, he said Prince “pulled out a knife and began stabbing Joey in the abdomen.”
Prince fled the scene on foot following the incident and was arrested two hours later. Starkville Police Chief David Lindley said the police have not yet recovered the knife used in the attack.
