Fair leads the defense for Jackets

David Fair wants everyone to understand that he's now a linebacker in the Starkville High School defensive system.
Opponents of the Yellowjackets understand the importance of trying to find Fair wherever he lines up.
Fair leads SHS with 22 total tackles and is one of the senior leaders on the team.
As the Jackets continue their season tonight (7:30 p.m.) against the Tupelo Golden Wave at home, coach Jamie Mitchell continues to be glad to say Fair is on his side.
"He's going to be around the football," Mitchell said. "He's leading us in tackles and doing a really good job of chasing the ball. He's being a good leader for us."
Mitchell knows he must continue to get a consistent effort from Fair and the entire defense because of the trend of Starkville playing close games.
When the Jackets take on the Golden Wave, Mitchell has no reason to believe it will be any different.
"It will probably come down to the last few minutes and it seems like that's what we're all about here playing games that come down to the 48th minute," Mitchell said. "One thing about it, the people get their money's worth and it keeps people in the seats."
Mitchell believes defense remains the strength of the SHS squad because of the depth at each position.
With the potential of having another hot and humid night in Starkville, Mitchell calls having an extra body to substitute in being ' a luxury.'
Offensively for the Jackets, Mitchell likes the progress of quarterback Gabe Myles.
Myles has completed 11 of 29 pass attempts for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 26 times for 49 more yards and two scores.
"In the very near future, he's going to blossom and make big play after big play," Mitchell said of Myles. "He definitely has that potential. He's throwing the ball better. Once he gets in a groove where he's consistent throwing, he's going to be a tough cookie to handle."
