WEIR – The Wolverines picked up a nail-bitting road win on Friday night as they defeated Weir 15-14.
Weir took an early 6-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by J.R. Hall in the first quarter, and it took East Webster almost a full quarter before they could answer.
The Wolverines did answer with a touchdown of their own with 5:16 left in the first half when Monterrious Davis ran in from 5 yards out. Tyler Cosby then made the extra point to give East Webster a 7-6 lead.
After halftime, the Lions came out and scored on a 12-yard run and went for two. The two-point conversion was good and the Lions led 14-7.
As time began to wind down, the Wolverines put together a drive that ended with Codie McKee connecting with Deangelo Liggins for a 32-yard touchdown with 1:49 remaining.
Instead of sending the kicking unit on the field for the extra point and the tie, Wolverine head coach Doug Wilson sent his offense on the field to go for the win.
Wilson put the ball in his quarterback McKee's hands. McKee didn't let his coach down as he found Brett Flora in the end zone, converting the two-point attempt and gave the Wolverines the 15-14 lead.
The East Webster defense was able to contain the Lion offense for the final 1:49 to pick up the road win.
East Webster will be on the road again next week when they travel to Caledonia to take on the Confederates at 7:30 p.m.
