MADDEN – The Starkville Academy Volunteers were able to improve their record to 4-0 in a big way by defeating Leake Academy 42-14 Friday night.
Ryan Mann rushed for 185 yards and four touchdowns to lead the SA attack on the road.
After Leake took a 7-0 advantage in the first quarter, Mann scored the first of his touchdowns for the Vols on a 5-yard run with 2:36 left in the opening frame. Jonathon Burton's first of six extra point kicks tied the game.
In the second quarter, Mann had an 8-yard TD run and quarterback Drew Pellum found running back James Mapp for a 38-yard scoring pass to put SA up 21-7 at halftime.
The Vols got the only touchdown of the third quarter on a 2-yard Mann run.
Leake closed the gap to 28-14 early in the fourth frame, but Starkville Academy got the needed cushion with two big scoring plays, a 58-yard run by Mann and a 39-yard run by Brandon Sharp.
The Vols rolled up 457 yards of total offense with 396 of that coming on the ground. Pellum rushed 15 times for 118 yards.
Defensively, SA was paced by the efforts of Mapp, Angus Catchot and Chip Jansenn.
The Vols will try to keep their season winning streak going next Friday when they make the trip to Hillcrest Christian in Jackson.
