A Starkville woman died after suffering injuries in a vehicular collision at the intersection of Reed Road and Highway 25 at 10:39 a.m. Friday.
Jessie Elle Brown, 65, of 1849 Reed Road, Starkville, died at 10:56 p.m. that night at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, where she was transported after the accident.
Starkville Police Chief David Lindley said Brown was traveling west on Reed Road, attempting to cross Highway 25 in her 1995 Chevrolet Lumina. At the same time, Leander Fletcher, of Kosciusko, was southbound in a 1986 International 18-wheeler.
Brown’s vehicle collided with the left side of Fletcher’s truck, Lindley said, and Fletcher was not found to be at fault.
“The cause of the accident appears to be failure to yield right of way on the part of the victim,” Lindley said.
SPD Captain Chris Thomas said Fletcher was not hurt. However, Thomas said, the SPD arrested Fletcher after the accident upon discovering he was driving with a suspended license and no tag.
Thomas said the accident is still under investigation.
