Supervisors to set second dog law hearing

October 15, 2011

By Carl Smith

Oktibbeha County Supervisors are expected to set a date for its next public hearing on a potential countywide vicious dog ordinance tomorrow during its second regular meeting of the month.
Supervisors unveiled their first draft of the potential ordinance – which defined vicious dogs, set vaccination requirements and delegated its enforcement to the sheriff’s department – in a mid-September hearing. During that meeting, the board was asked to consider a countywide leash law, but supervisors said it was not ready to tackle that type of legislation at the time.
Supervisors will also hear a budget presentation from Jack Wallace, Oktibbeha County Economic Development Agency’s board president.
Wallace said OCEDA is required to have its annual budget approved by supervisors, and expects the board to do so tomorrow. Most of OCEDA’s revenue comes from the leases it collects from its multi-tenant building in the Thad Cochran Research Park.
“It’s a barebones budget phased for our office overhead. Most of the funds will be used for upgrading the research building,” Wallace said. “We’re also sponsoring $10,000 to be used for marketing to retirees.
The board is also scheduled to hear from library spokesperson Phillip Griffin after he was unable to attend a previous meeting. Library spokesperson Ginny Holtcamp said his presentation would be postponed due to a scheduling conflict. County Administrator Don Posey said Griffin was to speak to the board and thank them for funding.
