Two more Fridays for Maben Farmers’ Market

October 20, 2011

For Starkville Daily News

The season for the Farmers’ Market in Maben ends on Oct. 28, the last Friday in October. The Farmers’ Market committee wishes to thank all of the 33 different vendors who have come to sell at the market this year as well as all of our friends and neighbors who have supported our vendors in the weeks since we opened on July 1. We look forward to seeing many of you every week and really appreciate your coming to patronize your favorite sellers and purchase their reliable products.
Last week there were two new vendors: Della Edmunds and Summer Elinburg. Della brought jars of her delicious pear preserves and Chow Chow, made with green tomatoes, vinegar, hot peppers, cabbage and a little sugar. She sold quite a bit of her product even if it was her first day at the market. Although she is from Starkville she is familiar with Maben because her son is William Manning Jr., a senior at West Oktibbeha High School. Della is married to Rev. Calvin Edmunds and they have a daughter, Ashaliyha Edmunds, who is in the 4th grade at Ward Stewart Elementary in Starkville. Della has a wonderful smile and hopes that you will come by her table to try her wares.
Summer Elinburg of near Maben and her friend, Katelyn Woods, also came for the first time and featured Summer’s hand crafted and painted Christmas decorations and other large cut-out hanging designs that are perfect for door or wall decorations. Summer also brought our first ‘yard sale’ items, beautiful clothes and shoes for children. One such outfit was a red corduroy dress for a little girl that had a matching Santa hat. It was purchased by Shay Jones who was shopping early during the first hour of the market. There were also cute children’s boots and a variety of baby items including a car seat and crib toys. Next week Summer promises to bring more children’s, adult men’s and women’s clothes. She donates 20% of all her proceeds to Faith Baptist Church at Center Grove. Summer is married to Cody, who was on hand to help her set up her tent, and they have two daughters, Kayleigh and Kristen, ages 3 and 8 months respectively.
This coming Friday two of our favorite vendors will be returning to help close out our season. Lancaster Farms of Starkville will be here with fresh produce and canned goods. Eric has taken off a few weeks to regroup and come back stronger than ever. Also returning is the Hummus Lady who has missed a couple of markets. She will bring her famous hummus, pita bread, and other Middle Eastern delicacies. If you haven’t tried her baklava you have missed a real treat. Look for our regular vendors to return: Leola Mason, who brings fried pies, caramel and red velvet cakes and apple cakes; Samantha Fulgham, who sells fried pork skins in several flavors; Hollis Smith, who offers handmade necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings; Vanik Eaddy, who specializes in delicious honey in pints and quarts; and Cynthia Williams with her colorful poof-net door decorations and fantastic pastel paintings.
The winner of the cash giveaway this past week was Linda S. Williams, who lives on Stallings Road near Maben. She was waiting for the drawing and visiting with the other customers who had come to the market so she was there to receive her $50 check. She had purchased a big bunch of collards, a pint of honey and a fried pie, which she ate while she waited for the drawing. She said that one of the things she appreciates about having the farmers’ market on Fridays is that she gets to visit with so many folks she knows. That little pleasure isn’t always possible in our world today when people tend to stay home more because of the high cost of gas.
New vendors are always welcome. There is no cost to vendors, but you do have to fill out a registration form and agree to follow our rules of operation. Call (662) 263-8458 for more information.
