When the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star slow-pitch softball games get underway, the Class A/2A/3A South team is set to have a Eupora flavor.
Lady Eagles seniors Katelyn Rodgers and Lindsey Williamson will be a part of a South squad led by Eupora head coach Trae Embry and assistant coach Kenneth Wade when action begins at Newton County High School Saturday at 1 p.m.
"(Rodgers and Williamson) have been with us for forever and as seniors, this is what you want to accomplish – to play in the Mississippi All-Star game," said Embry. "They are two of 12 players in Classes A, 2A and 3A that are still getting to play. That's a high honor and it's the same for getting to coach it. You've got a lot of your coaching peers that could have coached it also, and to get picked to coach and to get to be able to coach a couple of your players, that makes it even more special."
Rodgers, Eupora's leadoff hitter and infielder, was a starter for the Lady Eagles slow-pitch team since her 7th grade year. In the years that followed, Rodgers played all around the diamond for Embry, including time at catcher and outfield.
"Katelyn is very well-rounded as far as defense goes," said Embry. "Offensively, she's not going to hit a lot of doubles and triples, but she'll hit you a lot of singles. She just does a great job at what she does and whatever you need her to do."
Williamson was an outfielder for Eupora who also spent time at first base.
Unlike Rodgers, Embry says Williamson is more of a power threat that drives in runs at the plate.
"She's your RBI girl," said Embry. "She hit number two for us this year and did a great job.
"Both Katelyn and Lindsey did a great job. They both hit about .550 this year. "They're both good kids and both are very deserving of this."
Rodgers, Williamson, Embry and Wade will actually all take part in a pair of games on Saturday. After their 1 p.m. game, the Class 4A/5A/6A game will immediately take place. Following that, the Class A/2A/3A teams will again face off, while another Class 4A/5A/6A game concludes the day's festivities.
