Inaugural 3.6-mile run honors Bell’s memory, foundation

October 23, 2011

The Mississippi State University Student Association is adding a new homecoming tradition this year.
On Tuesday, Nov. 1, it will host the inaugural Nick Bell 3.6 Mile Run to raise money for the Nick Bell Mentoring Memorial Foundation. Bell was an MSU football player who died of a rare form of cancer last year. The run begins at 6 p.m.
The event’s name honors Bell’s player number — No. 36.
SA President Rhett Hobart said he is excited to pay homage to such an extraordinary fellow Bulldog.
“This event will serve as a great opportunity for the entire Bulldog Family to honor a young man who truly embodied the spirit of Mississippi State,” Hobart said.
The event serves as an opportunity to raise support for the Nick Bell Mentoring Memorial Foundation and allow the student body and community the opportunity to support and honor a great teammate and friend.
The Nick Bell Mentoring Memorial Foundation was created to assist and support programs that benefit young people academically. The foundation places special importance on teaching discipline, determination and the importance of character that lead to a successful life.
According to the Nick Bell Foundation website, the programs it supports are guided by the principles that shaped the Bell’s character.
The foundation strategically targets its efforts and resources to promote the importance of living your dream, not just passively observing from the sidelines of life; develop and fund academic enrichment and character building programs which support the efforts of our young people in becoming the best person they can be and doing the best they can do; create opportunities, through mentorship, for young people to see who and what they desire to become; provide guidance that will lead young people to discover the knowledge that each of them has a gift; and supports programs which promote cultural diversity and respect for all people.
Nick Bell’s mother, Linda Bell, has been an active part in the foundation. She penned a message on the website explaining they ways in which the foundation honors her son.
“Academic excellence, good morals, a strong work ethic and love for people are the qualities that made my son the extraordinary young man he was,” Linda Bell said. “To mentor and give young people all across this country the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and become leaders in the workplace and in their communities is the goal of the Nick Bell Mentoring Memorial Foundation. We need to let our young people know –– in ways they can measure –– that someone cares for them and believes in them beyond their own households.”
The memorial run will be marked with cowbell ringers guiding walkers and runners through turns. The 3.6-mile course will go through campus.
Pre-registration opened on Oct. 19th and closes on Wednesday. Forms will be available online at All forms should be turned in to the Student Association Office in the Colvard Student Union Suite 314.
A $15 registration fee must accompany the application when pre-registering. Participants may register on the day of the event for an increased fee of $20.
Race day registration starts at 4:45 p.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. All early registrants are guaranteed a T-shirt and race day registrants will receive theirs at a later date.
