State, county elections set for tomorrow

November 6, 2011

Polling locations across Oktibbeha County will be open for the state and county general elections Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Myles Carpenter, county election commissioner, said the polling locations are identical to those used in the primaries and runoffs in August. That means voters planning to cast their ballots at Humphrey Coliseum and in Maben will still vote in different locations than the ones specified on the county’s official website.
Because their City Hall is still in the early stages of reconstruction, Carpenter said, Maben voters will still need to cast ballots at the Maben Fire Department located near City Hall. Starkville voters from the east and northeast precincts will also still vote in the lobby connecting Humphrey Coliseum to the new practice facility.
Carpenter said it would be ideal if voters from the East Starkville precinct came in through the west doors, located near the Palmeiro Center, and voters from the Northeast Starkville precinct came in through the east doors, closer to the Sanderson Center.
Carpenter said he encourages all citizens to add their votes to the election process.
The complete list of polling places and corresponding precincts is as follows:

County offices appearing on the ballots include: chancery court clerk, circuit court clerk, sheriff, tax assessor, attorney, coroner, surveyor, superintendent of education, supervisors for five districts, justice court judges for three districts and constables for three districts.
Citizens will also have the opportunity to vote on three ballot initiatives. Initiative 26 would define the term “person” as including every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the equivalent thereof. Initiative 27 would amend the Mississippi Constitution to require people to submit government-issued photo identification to vote. Initiative 31 would prohibit the government from taking private property by eminent domain and then transferring it to other persons.
