SHS soccer wins opener
TUPELO – The Starkville High boys soccer team opened up the season with a win Thursday night, topping Corinth 2-1 at the Tupelo High School Classic.
Taylor Wise's goal in the 9th minute and Dylan Howard's score in the 21st minute gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 advantage.
Corinth scored in the second half to cut SHS's lead in half, but the Jackets held on to improve to 1-0 for the year.
"We did pretty well for our first game," said Starkville head coach Brian Bennett. "We missed some opportunities, but overall, I thought we played well."
The Jackets will return to action at Tupelo on Saturday, as SHS battles Caledonia at 2:30 p.m.
Junior Jackets sweep Aberdeen
The Armstrong Middle School and Starkville High ninth grade basketball teams pulled off a Thursday night sweep of Aberdeen.
Armstrong came away with a 57-23 win, sparked by Tyson Carter's 11 points.
Jeremy Skinner added eight points and John King totaled six for Armstrong.
The SHS ninth graders topped Aberdeen 52-16.
Josh Skinner scored nine points in the contest, Caleb Wilson and Jay Clay each scored seven and Jared Williams and Raphael Leonard added six apiece.
Both Armstrong and the Starkville ninth grade teams improved to 2-0 overall this season with the wins.
Armstrong will return to action on Saturday at the Tupelo Middle School Classic.
Armstrong faces Olive Branch at 10 a.m. and Southaven at 11 a.m. before battling host Tupelo at 2 p.m.
Armstrong and the SHS ninth graders both play on Monday beginning at 5 p.m. at the Armstrong Middle School gymnasium, hosting Columbus.
