Volunteers pick up road victory

MERIDIAN â€“ The Starkville Academy Volunteers had the outside game going in the first half, then the inside game was effective in the second half and they went on to a 68-49 road victory over Lamar School Thursday night.
Carnail Minor had the shooting touch in the first half for the Vols as he scored 21 of his game-high 27 points. For the game, Minor had five 3-point field goals.
In the second half, it was the scoring of Calvin Young in the paint that helped Starkville Academy's offense. Young finished the game with 21 points.
The Vols, who improved to 3-0, have two key conference games at home next week with Jackson Academy Tuesday and Jackson Prep Thursday.

MERIDIAN â€“ The Lady Vols endured a slower than normal shooting night, but played well enough defensively to improve their record to 6-0.

Starkville Academy shot 31 percent (18-of-58) from the field and 43 percent (6-of-14) from 3-point range. The Lady Vols were able to hold down Lamar's leading scorer Olivia Mabry to 22 points and out-rebounded their hosts 38-23.
Nora Kathryn Carroll led SA with 16 points, while Anna Lea Little also scored in double digits with 13 points. Sallie Kate Richardson was next in the scoring column with eight points.
